Understanding Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace

Psychosocial hazards refer to factors in the design or management of work that increase the risk of work-related stress, potentially leading to psychological or physical harm. These hazards can arise from workplace interactions, behaviours, organisational culture, work design, management practices, or the broader work environment. 

Why is it important to understand Psychosocial Hazards?

Under the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, employers, or persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), have a legal obligation to manage psychosocial risks in the workplace. This requirement is now explicitly stated in the Work Health and Safety Amendment (Managing Psychosocial Risk and Other Measures) Regulations 2022, which mandates that employers proactively identify and control psychosocial risks.
